A four-year partnership: From social leadership to full ESG delivery

How OneVentures built environmental and governance strength to match its long-standing social performance

Matt Sinnamon - OneVentures_edited.jpg

“We had a strong commitment to social sustainability, supported by a genuine track record and wanted to build on that foundation by bringing greater structure, accountability and rigour to the environmental and governance dimensions of ESG. Caroline has been amazing, she worked alongside us through every step - advising on direction, helping develop our policies and systems, measure our emissions, set credible and achievable targets and keeping the programme on track year after year. We're mindful we still have a long way to go in some areas, but we're proud of the foundations we've built and the progress we made in our journey”

OneVentures, Australia

In a nutshell

Since late 2022, OneVentures has worked with S360 to turn long-held responsible investment values and high social performance into a measurable, well-governed ESG programme.

OneVentures:

  • Helped bring the Australasian venture capital (VC) community together around a shared environmental social and governance (ESG) framework, now used across the sector, with pilot findings published by the Australian Investment Council and a third year of annual benchmarking data now due to be collected and shared through the Australian Government

  • Measures, discloses, and offsets its operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions every year, with a board-approved net zero pathway now tracked against milestones and plans to reduce financed emissions, the trickiest part of a VC taking climate action

  • Now delivers across the full ESG spectrum - from stewardship, climate risk, and supplier screening to DEI, staff volunteering, and investor reporting - covering portfolio companies representing 88% of its $1.46 billion in assets under management

The challenge

Strong social performance had long set OneVentures apart - gender equality and diversity leadership since 2010, and a responsible investment filter among the first in Australian VC. The challenge wasn't commitment. It was breadth: Turning excellence in one dimension of ESG into credible delivery across all of them.

A VC firm primarily holds minority stakes in early-stage companies that rarely have a sustainability manager, its biggest emissions sit in businesses it doesn't control, and in 2022 there was no agreed way to measure any of it in Australia and New Zealand. OneVentures, a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) had the values and the filter. What it wanted next was a way to put honest numbers behind them, widen the scope beyond the social space and create an action plan to deliver on it.

And it recognised early that this required collaboration. If every VC firm picked its own framework, portfolio companies backed by more than one investor would face duplicate questionnaires measuring the same things differently. A shared answer would be better for everyone, especially the startups doing the reporting. And a shared framework offered something no firm could build alone: Benchmarks. Firms measuring the same way can compare themselves with peers at home and overseas, see clearly where they need to improve, and share tools and calibration along the way - which is how measurement turns into genuine progress, not just reporting

The solution

But the framework was just a springboard, not the destination. The real work of the four years has been internal, strengthening delivery across the full ESG spectrum:

  • Disclosure that keeps improving. Caroline guided OneVentures' first UNPRI submission, now an annual discipline in its third consecutive year, with each cycle used to strengthen the firm's approach.

  • A full greenhouse gas footprint, measured for the first time and now tracked monthly through systems the firm already used, disclosed every year, with operational emissions offset through verified carbon credits.

  • A policy with teeth. The Responsible Investment Policy has matured into a full ESG and Responsible Investment Policy: Stewardship procedures, supplier ESG screening, climate risk and opportunity guidelines, and materiality weighting so each portfolio company is assessed on what is financially relevant to its sector. ESG now sits inside due diligence for every new investment.

  • People at the centre. A broadened DEI survey gave staff a voice on more than gender alone, with recommendations acted on, and a paid volunteering day, engagement plan, and ESG training framework are now rolling out.

And then the boldest step so far: A Board-approved 25-year pathway to net zero operational emissions by 2050, with milestones and a monitoring plan. Financed emissions - those of portfolio companies - are the largest and hardest part of any VC firm's footprint, and OneVentures measures and discloses them while the work of helping reduce them continues. The firm chose not to wait: Net zero for its own operations is the commitment it can act on now, with two years of verified carbon neutral operations already behind it.

Results & learnings

Four years of partnership with S360 and steady work have taken OneVentures from strong social foundations to a full ESG programme, delivered and governed as part of everyday business.

A programme with structure. Governance, milestones, and reporting now underpin every commitment – from climate action to DEI, from stakeholder engagement to portfolio activation.

Carbon discipline. All emissions are measured, disclosed, and operations offset every year, with two years of verified carbon-neutral operations behind the firm and a board-approved net zero pathway tracked against milestones ahead of it.

Sector influence through collaboration. The shared framework OneVentures helped bring together now covers Australasian venture capital, with benchmarks that let firms and their portfolio companies measure, compare, and improve together.

Transparency. OneVentures publishes its GHG methodology, discloses its full footprint including financed emissions - so investors, staff, and portfolio companies can see exactly where the firm stands.

The learning? Start with what you can measure, act on what you can control, and set the long-term direction early. With a pathway and milestones in place, every year builds toward the goal, making each step more efficient and the impact greater.

Scaling sustainability in a franchise model –

Jani-King’s path to measurable impact

Polina Maslova.jpg

“The S360 software has given me the structure I needed to manage sustainability across our business, including 500+ franchisees. The dashboards, templates, and resources make it much easier to track progress and report consistently. On top of that, the wraparound support has been invaluable – from 1:1 guidance that builds my confidence, to the monthly Sustainability Sparks sessions where I can connect with peers, and the regular workshops and panels that bring fresh ideas on the topics we ask for. With this combination of tools and support, sustainability now feels achievable, not overwhelming.”

Polina Maslova, Commercial Manager

JK Building Wellness & Jani-King New Zealand

New Zealand

The challenge

Jani-King NZ has long been committed to sustainability. From pioneering the use of probiotic cleaning products to achieving Toitū certifications and planting native trees through Trees That Count, sustainability is already integrated into their services and values.

The bigger challenge was operational and supply chains. With more than 500 franchisees and 3000 clients, ensuring consistency across the network required strong systems, clear data, and practical ways to engage people. For Polina, Commercial Manager, taking on responsibility for sustainability meant balancing ambition with the reality of limited time and resources. On top of that, collecting and calculating carbon emissions using Toitū Carbon Compatible methodology added another layer of complexity – turning data into action across such a large network.

The solution

Polina began using the S360 to bring clarity and structure to her role, make delivery more efficient by using the software and upskilling through the built-in resources, monthly peer sessions, 1:1 support and monthly workshops.

With S360, Jani-King:

  • Applied global best practices and standards to shape goals and targets and create a long-term ESG strategy.

  • Simplified data collection and reporting, so that carbon emissions, other environmental, social and governance metrics could inform real reduction opportunities, not just compliance.

  • Introduced clear, achievable goals in S360, turning overwhelming tasks into a structured roadmap.

  • Provided resources and templates to save time and ensure consistency in communication.

  • Used workshops and peer sessions to upskill, keep ideas fresh and spark new ways of approaching challenges.

Results & learnings

With the support of S360, Jani-King has strengthened its ability to manage sustainability across the business

  • Momentum – sustainability is shifting from an add-on to a structured programme of continuous improvement.

  • Clarity – progress is now tracked and reported in a consistent, structured way.

  • Efficiency – templates, resources, project management tools and automated workflows have reduced admin burden.

  • Confidence – executive and board conversations are backed by reliable data and reporting.

What once felt overwhelming is now a clear pathway forward. With the right mix of tools and support, Jani-King is turning sustainability from a complex challenge into a structured programme of continuous improvement across its franchise network.

Cutting waste by 44% in just one year -
Untouched World's sustainability success

Fiona Bretherton - Untouched World.jpg

"The expert guidance and easily accessible data in the S360 dashboards has greatly enhanced our decision-making, helping us identify and implement improvements and enabling us to nearly cut our waste in half whilst growing!”

Fiona Bretherton

Development Manager, Untouched World

New Zealand

The challenge

The award-winning New Zealand lifestyle brand had made strong progress on textile circularity – diverting 99% of textile waste from landfill – but rising production volumes led to an unintended consequence: a 28.4% increase in general waste to landfill. As the business grew, so did the complexity of managing waste streams, exposing the need for smarter systems and practices.

Their goal was clear: reduce landfill waste while improving waste practices across the organisation – proving that growth doesn’t have to come at an environmental cost.

However, tracking waste reduction, engaging staff, and ensuring sustained improvements required more than spreadsheets and manual processes. To drive real change, they needed a structured approach with clear data insights and streamlined administration.

The solution

S360 provided both expert guidance and software tools to support Untouched World's waste reduction efforts. By combining expert advice with technology, S360 enabled them to engage their team, identify waste reduction opportunities, and turn strategy into action.

S360 sustainability experts worked closely with Untouched World to:

  • Engage staff and get them on board with waste reduction efforts.

  • Identify practical opportunities for reducing waste within their operations.

  • Provide guidance on best practices and implementation strategies.

Untouched World implemented a range of actions to reduce waste, including:

  • Locking bins outside business hours to curb unauthorised dumping

  • Introducing transparent bin liners to increase visibility and behavioural accountability

  • Launching targeted recycling education, including new induction materials

  • Ensuring clear signage and accessibility of recycling stations

  • Moving to cloud-based systems to reduce paper use

  • Hosting zero-waste events

  • Composting organic waste from kitchens and landscaping

  • Removed the option of disposable cups in their on-site cafe.

  • Using rechargeable batteries

  • Working with suppliers to reduce packaging waste

  • Embedding waste practices into the onboarding process for long-term cultural consistency

S360’s platform provided the structure and automation needed to sustain progress:

  • Centralised waste tracking – Offered a clear, data-driven view of waste trends through the calculator and tracker.

  • Graphical insights – Made it easier to pinpoint problem areas and monitor improvements.

  • Task automation – Reduced administrative burden by ensuring accountability and follow-ups.

  • Engagement features – Helped align staff with sustainability goals through interactive tools.

Results & learnings

Not only did Untouched World avoid further increases in waste while continuing to grow, but they actually cut waste to landfill by 43.98% in just one year! S360’s platform and Caroline's advise provided the structure and flexibility needed to implement continuous, feedback-driven improvements, reinforcing their commitment to long-term sustainability.

Sustainability is an evolving journey, and Untouched World is proof that data, engagement, and smart tools can turn ambitious goals into measurable impact.

Streamlining B Corp Certification for INNOVATIVE IT Firm

Sophie Ross - Indicium Dynamics.jpg

"Before using S360, I was managing the preparation to get B Corp certified with Excel spreadsheets and various folders, which was tedious. S360 has been a game changer for us. The ability to allocate tasks and automate follow-ups has given me a clear overview of our progress. If S360 had been available from the start, it would have saved us significant time in preparation.”

Sophie Ross

Communications Coordinator, Indicium Dynamics

Australia

The challenge

In 2024, Indicium Dynamics began its B Corp certification journey. While their small size allowed for agility, balancing certification with other responsibilities was difficult.

Managing the process through Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Teams made it hard to track progress, set goals, and maintain momentum. Research & Communications Coordinator Sophie Ross found it time-consuming to reorient herself after focusing on other tasks.

The solution

For organisations pursuing B Corp certification, staying on top of progress, aligning tasks with B Corp requirements, and ensuring accountability can be time-consuming and complex. Without a centralised system, managing action items, tracking improvements, and engaging the team requires significant manual effort.

S360 provided the structure and automation needed to streamline the certification process, reducing administrative overhead and improving efficiency. By bringing all B Corp-related tasks, progress tracking, and resources into one platform, S360 enabled the team to focus on making meaningful improvements rather than managing spreadsheets and follow-ups.

S360’s platform transformed the certification process by:

  • Centralising progress tracking – Importing the Impact Assessment report created a clear, real-time overview of completed actions, ongoing initiatives, and areas for improvement, doing away with the need for scattered documents.

  • Aligning goals with B Corp requirements – Tasks and action items were directly linked to certification questions, making it easier for team members to understand priorities and demonstrate alignment.

  • Automating task management – Assigned tasks were tracked within the platform, with automated reminders ensuring follow-through and reducing the need for manual follow-ups.

  • Providing B Corp resources – Access to a library of templates and guides streamlined documentation and made the certification process more efficient.

With these capabilities, S360 helped remove complexity from the B Corp certification process, enabling the organisation to maintain momentum, track progress with clarity, and focus on achieving meaningful sustainability outcomes.

Results & learnings

Indicium Dynamics is now proudly B Corp certified. S360 helped them save valuable time, improved clarity, and reduced stress, helping them stay on track.
